I for one have gotten tired of the “sacred but not secret” throwaway line we Mormons tend to use when talking about the temple ceremonies,* since if you don’t talk openly about something it is secret, even if that’s not the core reason you’re not talking about it.
* Yes, temple ceremonies, not temple ceremony—there’s more than one.

My question is, why do we feel the need to shy away from the "secret" nature of temple ceremonies anyway? Do we feel that we need to apologize for them?
Parts are secret. That's clear. Parts aren't, but if you say much some people might mock it and that's not cool. So I think that's why the sacred is kept secret.
Of course Big Love hired an ex-Mormon to help write the temple ceremonies for their episodes so the world can see them anyway.
I do wonder, though, if non-Mormons would be as likely to mock the temple ceremonies if we weren't so weirdly hung-up about them.
Of course, i don't see much evidence that very many people are all that interested in mocking what they know about them, so i tend to think that that particular worry must stem from something else. Maybe we like to think that we're more important than we really are, and deserve more of the world's attention than we really get?
