What’s the fascination with sleeping on dirt?

What’s with the Mormon adoration of camping? I mean, we’ve got scout camp, girls* camp, father-son campouts, ward campouts, relief society retreats (generally involving camping), and so on.

I mean, really—why? Do we really feel that sleeping on dirt helps people commune with the Spirit? Or at least that it helps people be friendlier with each other?

’Cause i don’t. It just tends to make me irritable for having neither easy access to a well-working shower nor a safe place to hide from the mosquitoes—not my idea of happiness in building the Kingdom, you know?

* <ahem /> Young women’s camp, if you don’t mind.

I HATE camping. Luckily we have no ward campouts or RS retreats here. I wouldn't go anyway if we did. I do not like to sweat and I definitely do not like dirt. Or smoke from campfires. And s'mores are just nasty.

I like camping (as long as there is easy access to a modern toilet, sink and shower facility), so I am more puzzled by the fascination with treks. Especially ones that involve handcarts.

But I would eat s'mores every day of my life if I could.

WTF! I usually sleep on an air-bed, inside a good sleeping bag, and in my pyjamas when go camping. No wonder you don't like it!

Longtack's response is seriously cracking me up. Yeah, of course sleeping on dirt should be taken completely literally. I am very glad to know s/he wears pajamas.
