Looking the part

Absolutely true i-am-not-making-this-up story that happened to me earlier today:

So we had a new full-time missionary transferred into our ward this past week. I’d been talking to a few members of the ward in the foyer before church, and when he didn’t have anybody talking to him i went up and introduced myself: “Hi, i’m David B—, and i’m the ward clerk.”

He shook my hand and said, “Yeah, i’d guessed that”, to which i replied, “Ah! You saw me, thought ’He looks completely active, but he’s not wearing a white shirt and a tie,* so he must be the ward clerk!’”

He laughed, but he also let on that i’d guessed pretty much correctly.

* For the purposes of filling in the reader, i was wearing a black mandarin-collar shirt. No tie, of course, ’cause that would have been silly, and no suit jacket ’cause i don’t like to let on whether i own one or not.

Too funny.

There are four men in our ward who, while they do wear ties, do not usually wear white shirts. One is an early 20's guy. He apparently go super grief over not wearing a while shirt in their previous ward. That and his beautiful, gorgeous, long hair (and, really, if you just listen to his reason for growing it out there is no way anyone should give him grief). Then there's Jamie, who never, ever wears a jacket over his shirt because, well, he doesn't actually own one. He gets the most compliments about his purple shirt. And then there are two of the "old" guys. Daddy and a man in his 70s.

The ward clerk always wears a white shirt, tie, and suit coat.

This is why Jim says that he is always going to have a calling in Young Men. He wears khaki or other-colored Dockers, a white shirt and tie. Usually he wears a sweater because he's always cold in church. So he says he will always be in YM because he follows their dress code.

Maybe i’ll start wearing a bow tie—then i’ll be safe from getting called to anything.

When we were in Alexandria the bishop's son-in-law and grandson wore bow ties!
