The very early Mormons (before what people often mean by “the early Mormons”—i’m talking about the late 1820s and early 1830s) tended to believe pretty firmly in a very inclusive, almost universal heaven. What happened to push us away from that?
(Couldn’t be a need to feel better than others, i’m sure. Right?)

Celestial kingdom is pretty exclusive. It's the other two that most people go to.
I’ve heard that claim before, Heather, but i’ve never seen any evidence for it—so is it folklore or something more real?
I get that vibe from the Doctrine and Covenants. The section on what types of people go where when talking about the three degrees of glory.
I don’t get any sort of ratios from it, myself—it just states that people with characteristic set X go here, with set Y go there, and so on.
And, of course, when you consider the really, really high proportion of people who died before reaching age eight (still do, in fact, it’s just not quite as horrible as it historically was), that’s a pretty huge proportion guaranteed the celestial kingdom right there.
